How to Test a Laptop Screen for Dead Pixels

New laptops should arrive with a flawless panel — but defects slip through. Here's how to check yours in under two minutes, and what to do about anything you find.
Why test right away?
Most return windows are short — often 14 to 30 days from delivery. Catching a dead pixel on day one is the difference between a free replacement and living with it for years. Manufacturer warranties usually cover the laptop for a year or more, but pixel defects are treated separately from other faults: many makers only replace a panel once the defect count crosses a threshold, while the retailer's no-questions return window has no threshold at all. That window is your strongest position, so use it first.
The same logic applies to a used laptop. Test it in front of the seller, before money changes hands.
Set up before you look
Two minutes of prep makes faults obvious instead of ambiguous:
- Clean the screen. A speck of dust looks exactly like a stuck pixel. Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth — see How to Clean Your Monitor or Laptop Screen Safely if it needs more than that.
- Set the display to its native resolution. A scaled-down resolution blurs single pixels into a smudge and can hide a defect completely.
- Turn brightness to maximum and turn off any auto-brightness, night mode, or blue light filter — a warm tint masks color faults.
- Dim the room. Reflections on a glossy laptop panel hide small defects; a dark room makes bright pixels jump out.
The 60-second test
- Open the Dead Pixel Test and set brightness to maximum.
- Click Start full-screen test.
- Step through each solid color with the arrow keys — black, white, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, and 50% grey.
- Look closely for any dot that stays the wrong color. Scan in a slow grid pattern rather than staring at the middle; defects near the edges are easy to miss.
Get your eyes about 30 to 40 cm from the panel. Closer than that and you'll start seeing the pixel structure itself, which is normal and not a fault.
What you're looking for
- A dead pixel stays black on every color. It receives no power, so it never lights up.
- A stuck pixel is locked on one color (often red, green, or blue). It shows most clearly against black and against the two colors it isn't.
- Bright pixels — sometimes called hot pixels — glow white on a black background and stay lit no matter what is displayed.
- A stuck sub-pixel is smaller and dimmer than a full stuck pixel, because only one of the three red/green/blue elements is faulty. On a high-density laptop panel it may look like a faint colored speck.

Dust, or a defect?
Change the background color. Dirt on the outside of the glass stays the same shade against every background and can be nudged with a fingertip. A real pixel fault sits inside the panel: it never moves, and its appearance changes depending on what is behind it. If a mark disappears when you press very gently on the bezel, it is on the surface.
Laptop-specific things that are not dead pixels
- Corner glow and edge bleed. Slightly brighter patches at the corners of a black screen are backlight bleed, not pixel damage. Check with the Backlight Bleed Test — a small amount is normal on nearly every LCD laptop.
- Pressure marks. Diffuse light or dark blotches, often in a line, usually come from the lid pressing on the panel — during shipping, or from carrying the laptop by its screen. These are a mechanical fault, not a pixel fault, and they are worth returning.
- A slightly warm or cool white. Panels vary. That's calibration, not a defect.
- A visible grid at very close range. That's the pixel structure of the panel itself, and every screen has it.
How many defects are "acceptable"?
Manufacturers typically grade panels against ISO 9241-307, and most consumer laptops are sold to Class II, which tolerates a small number of always-on, always-off, and stuck sub-pixels per million pixels before the panel counts as faulty. In practice that means a single dead pixel on a 1080p laptop often will not qualify for a warranty panel swap — but it will almost always qualify for a straight return inside the retailer's window. If you find something, in this order
- Stuck pixel: these are sometimes recoverable. Rapidly cycling colors over the affected area, and carefully targeted pressure, each revive a share of them — no method is reliable, and it usually takes repeated attempts. - Dead or bright pixel: software will not fix it. Nothing you display can make an unpowered pixel light up.
- Still there? Photograph it against a solid White Screen and a solid Black Screen, note the date, and start the return while the window is open.
Do the whole check on the day the laptop arrives, before you install anything or peel the protective film off the palm rest — a machine in original condition is far easier to send back.
