Dead Pixel Warranty Policies, Explained
Frustratingly, a single dead pixel usually isn't enough for a free replacement. Manufacturers grade panels against a standard.
The ISO 9241-307 standard
Displays are sorted into pixel-defect classes. Most consumer panels are Class II, which permits a small number of defects per million pixels:
- A handful of fully bright or dead pixels.
- A larger number of defective sub-pixels.
So a 4K panel (≈8.3 million pixels) can have several "allowed" defects and still pass.
What this means for you
- Bright/hot pixels are treated more strictly than dark ones — they're more likely to qualify.
- Clustered defects (several close together) are often covered even when scattered ones aren't.
- Some premium brands and retailers offer a zero bright-dot guarantee — worth paying for if you're picky.
Before you file a claim
- Document the defect: photograph the screen on solid colors from the Color Test.
- Note exactly where it is and on which colors it appears.
- Check whether your seller has a better return policy than the maker's warranty — returning within the window is often easier than a warranty claim.
